IMPORTANT NOTICE

The latest reports on traffic problems in Nairobi caused by protest show that travel in the following areas should be avoided for the next several hours:

Waiyaki Way, Kitengela, Lunga Lunga Road, Dagoreti, Komarock, Kayole, Kawangware, Kinoo, Kiambu, Kirinyaga, Kikuyu, and Uthiru.

Problems in these areas include roads blocked with parked trucks; and bonfires set in the center of roads. In addition, many matatu owners are not allowing their vehicles to run their routes, so many commuters will need to find an alternative method to get home this evening.

The protests are being held by the outlawed Mungiki sect, reportedly against extrajudicial killings. Any area where a crowd has gathered should be avoided, because it can turn violent and even deadly without notice. Take particular care to stay away from these areas.

These areas should be avoided:

Wayaki Way and Westlands

Eastlands

Near Ngong race track and Dagoreti roundabout

Muthaiga but far from the embassy, going out of town

Off Naivasha Road

Off Mombasa Road, but not near the airport

This list is not complete. It is sent give you an idea of roughly where some of the major problem areas are located. Please use good safety practices in any part of town, and be aware that protests and violence can flare up anywhere on a moment’s notice. Thank you.
